Egypt: Sisi Is Under Popular Pressure to Run for Presidency – Beblawy

Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy said Thursday that the spirit of the Arab Spring was still alive in his country and that the army chief likely to run for the presidency was no dictator, but more a De Gaulle figure.

“Sisi is under popular pressure to run for presidency. This is like De Gaulle and Eisenhower,” he said, referring to the French and US war heroes who later took political office.

“Those that are pushing Sisi to run are not the military camps, they are people in the streets, Beblawy said.

“Al-Sisi is quite popular among Egyptians, and he would make a candidate that a citizen can count on. But the final decision remains in the hands of the people,” he added.
